Ngāi Tahu is a tribal group in the South Island, made up of many hapū (sub tribes). Ngāi Tūāhuriri is the local Ngāi Tahu hapū (sub tribe) that holds mana whenua (traditional rights and responsibilities) over their takiwā which extends from the Hurunui to Hakatere and inland to the Main Divide. The Matapopore Charitable Trust has been established by Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga for the provision of cultural advice on Ngāi Tūāhuriri / Ngāi Tahu values, narratives and aspirations for the anchor projects and any other projects associated with the regeneration of Ōtautahi / Christchurch.
