Environment Canterbury, known as ECan, is the regional council for all of Canterbury. The Canterbury region is approximately 45,346 Km², stretching up to Kaikoura and down to Waitaki. Generally the purpose of the regional council is to manage the environment and resources in their area. This includes looking after the waterways as well as transport and civil defence. Ecan do encourage and support community lead projects for ecological restoration and environmental protection.
