Rekindle: “Empowering the Community to Create Items of Purpose”
As at December 2023, Rekindle is trying to secure a new venue. Click on the link below for updates.
Traditional handcrafts, connection to the natural environment, and collective creativity, are all intrinsic to the Rekindle mahi. Located in the heart of Christchurch city is Rekindle – a craft workshop that equips people to create what they need with what they have from their local environment. Crafts such as weaving, carving, and felting, are a few of the many handcrafts that Rekindle teaches in workshops led by skilled craftspeople. Through their work, Rekindle is ensuring that long lost crafts are revived within the community.
The workshops are run from the Christchurch Arts Centre, with a focus on creating items that are useful and practical from natural materials. Although based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Rekindle also runs workshops in Whakatū Nelson, and an annual weekend craft workshop in Ōtepoti Dunedin. Their Christchurch events run throughout the year, with some workshops providing opportunities for low income individuals to learn a craft at a low or no cost. Through this, Rekindle is committed to bringing craft workshops that are accessible to the whole community.
The workshops are designed to inspire people to continue creating at home throughout their lives. Rekindle keenly values sustainability, resourcefulness, and community. Their work is aimed at giving people a sense of independence and increased wellbeing, as they learn to make something by hand in an environment of collective creativity.
