Profile
Charlesworth Wetland Reserve is 20 ha of land bordered by Linwood Ave and Humphries drive. Starting out as a wetland,in the late 1850’s it was drained to build a soap factory, a carpet factory and candle factory. In the 920’s it became pasture-land. From mid 1990’s the Christchurch City Council cleared the paddocks, scraped tidal pools and in 2004 the reserve was oficially opened. Since 2005 over 130,000 native trees, shrubs and saltmarsh plants have been planted, largely by volunteers, coordinated by the Estuary Trust and supervised by Andrew Crossland – CCC Park Ranger. Every Sunday afternoon between 2 and 4pm you are invited to join the maintenance team to assist with tasks such as planting, pruning, mulching and invasive weed removal.
