Profile
Greening the Red Zone is an incorporated society. Its members are scientists, conservationists, former residents of the Avon River Red Zone, neighbours of the Avon River Red Zone and others. We promote an economically viable, community-focused, and environmentally sound future for the Avon River Red Zone and our city. We campaign for maximum ecological benefit from the quake-damaged River corridor nature returned to us. We want to see a place of sorrow and loss turned into a restored and healing natural landscape. We want the awa to be rejuvenated. All urban areas modify their environment, but Christchurch-Ōtautahi more than any other New Zealand city, removed all but traces of the natural landscape that came before. Our waterways were either drained or turned into drains, and the speck of Riccarton Bush is a remnant ghost of the past. Reintegrating the city with that unique landscape offers limitless benefits to the land, the River, our native biodiversity and our people.
